Autumn at Perryhill Farm
I don't often get to photograph people with their animals, so when Mary asked me to do a session with her and her horse, Bucky, I jumped at the opportunity. Bucky is a 6 year-old retired thoroughbred who used to race under the name Talkin' Stuff Mary adopted him nearly a year ago from the James River Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation located outside of Richmond, Virginia. With his new life, he got a new name. Mary shows him under the name Speak Easy, but around the farm, he's known simply as Bucky.
We talked about what Mary wanted to get out of the session and we both agreed that we wanted to get a few shots with a black background. Bucky is quiet for an ex-racehorse, intelligent, curious, and level-headed. I think these portraits capture his personality.
Bucky's pasture ended up being the perfect location to capture some moments with both horse and owner among the autumn leaves.
And of course we had to get some action shots!
I'm so happy that Mary found Bucky. He's going to live a very long, very spoiled life. As it should be!
